Clicking on the image above will bring you to the community pilot project for Yibboo.com, a social learning platform that helps match learners and teachers within your network.

What’s this all about?

Yibboo is a website that helps you connect with people in your community who can teach you what you want to learn (or learn what you want to teach). We’re a small but growing network. Our members are located around the world – including Canada, the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and the Netherlands!

How does it work?

STEP 1: Add your teachables and learnables

First you add a few teachables and learnables to your profile. (We can give you plenty of ideas if you need them.)

    STEP 2: Find your matches

You can then use the advanced search option to find Yibboo members in your local area who can teach what you want to learn (or learn what you want to teach)

STEP 3: Start sharing your knowledge!

You can also contact a Yibboo member directly or leave a message on their profile page to suggest they host a class. (Or you can request one-on-one instruction, if that’s what you prefer). You can also browse for upcoming classes hosted by Yibboo members, or go ahead and schedule your own class!

        What are learnables/teachables?

Learnables are things that you’d like to learn from someone else in a face-to-face situation. Teachables are things you’d be willing to teach in a face-to-face situation. You may be willing to teach just your friends, or maybe other people in your local community. It’s up to you!

I’m not sure I’m good enough/proficient enough to teach anything…

This is a social learning site, not a traditional school! Your teachables don’t have to be big, serious or complex. Think micro-skills: Instead of gardening, how about “how to grow marigolds?” Instead of music theory, how about “circle of fifths?” You get the idea!

Can I charge money for my classes?

Yes, if you want to. Keep in mind, however, that some people may be hesitant to pay for your classes if they don’t know who you are. You may find it easier to start by offering your first few classes for free in order to introduce yourself to Yibboo members.

What about privacy? I’m not sure I feel comfortable teaching/learning from strangers…

That’s totally understandable. You can control your own privacy settings on Yibboo. Use these settings to control who can see your profile, your classes, and more. Many Yibboo members choose to just teach and learn from their circle of friends. Using Yibboo makes it easy to search through your friends’ teachables and learnables.

Do I have to teach classes? Can’t I just teach someone one-on-one?

No, you don’t have to teach classes if you don’t want to, and yes, you can choose to just teach someone one-on-one if that’s what you prefer!

Can I use this site to teach/learn online?

No. We’ve got nothing against online learning – it’s a terrific way to learn new skills – but there are plenty of other websites that already do a great job of delivering online learning, like Instructables and eHow. Yibboo was founded to help people find face-to-face learning opportunities within their network.

I love Yibboo! What can I do to contribute?

Thank you, we love you too! Right now, the more people join Yibboo, the more useful it will be for everyone – so please invite your friends to join! You can also spread the word by telling people to join us at Yibboo.com.

        What does Yibboo mean?

Yibboo is an aboriginal (Michif) word that means “owl.” To learn more about the origin of the name for this site, you can read this post from my blog.
